«AVIVAC-REO» strain 1133

About the product

Live dry vaccine against avian reovirus tenosynovitis based on virus strain 1133 with supplied diluent.

The vaccine is prepared from attenuated avian reovirus strain 1133 propagated in fibroblast cells from SPF chicken embryos in the presence of a stabilizing agent. The vaccine has the appearance of a homogenous yellowish brown or pink porous substance that easily dissolves in water or normal saline without forming flakes or sediment. The vaccine is available in hermetically sealed vials containing 1 to 4 cm3 of the product, corresponding to 50–3000 doses per vial. The diluent supplied with the vaccine is available in 200 or 400 cm3 glass vials.

Biological properties

One immunizing dose of the vaccine contains not less than 104 TCID50/cm3 avian reovirus. Immunity in vaccinated chickens forms over a period of 3 weeks after double vaccination and lasts 10 to 12 weeks. To induce lifelong immunity it is advisable to revaccinate the birds at the age of 100–110 days with AVIVAC’s inactivated vaccine against avian reovirus tenosynovitis in accordance with the Instructions for use.

The vaccine is innocuous and non-reactogenic; it possesses no therapeutic properties.

Indications for use

The vaccine is used for prophylactic immunization of birds at farm units affected by reovirus tenosynovitis or in the presence of a risk thereof. Only clinically healthy birds should undergo vaccination. Birds should be vaccinated twice, at the age of 7 to 10 days and at the age of 35 to 40 days.

The vaccine is administered subcutaneously at a rate of 104 TCID50/cm3 per 0.2cm3 diluent. The injection site should be disinfected with 70% ethanol. The vial containing the diluted vaccine should be shaken intermittently. Robustness of immunity is tested 21 days post vaccination. Blood serum samples from 20 to 25 birds are tested by performing an ELISA assay following the conventional procedure.

Vaccination is considered successful if not less than 80% of the immunized chickens demonstrate mean antibody titres against avian reovirus exceeding the minimum threshold value specified by the manufacturer of the kit by 100% or more.
